And Yet, I'd Still Eat One

Photographer Dwight Eschliman has marvelously deconstructed a Twinkie, photographing each of its 37 or So Ingredients separately.

Check out a sampling of the various liquids, oils, and powders that come together to create the iconic snack cake:

Glucose

High-Fructose Corn Syrup

Polysorbate 60
Cellulose Gum

Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate

Red 40

FD&C Yellow #5

Ooooooh! How interesting that these things all look so innocuous on their own.

EXCEPT FOR THE SHORTENING OMG.

But even the glucose kind of appeals to me in a syrupy way.

Isn't it funny that the shortening is one of the ingredients most likely to be low carb? Not that vegetable shortening is healthy, mind you.

I especially love how the first images are of the minerals. It really tricks you into thinking that Twinkies are totally healthy!
I've never eaten a Twinkie.

(Pause. Because this declaration usually results in explosive shock and awe.)

I don't want one, though. I don't particularly like yellow cake or whipped cream, so I fail to see the point.

However, this deconstruction doesn't deter me all that much. If you told me that was chocolate cake, I'd still eat it.

No shock and awe, here. I have maybe consumed 3-4 Twinkies in my lifetime, and I'm oddly picky about when and where I enjoy whipped cream, but I agree that anything chocolate is far superior to yellow cake.
Sometimes I forget that you don't like whipped cream in all the right places (FROZEN HOT CHOCOLATE), and when you bring it up, I sometimes think, "I have nothing in common with this person."

But then I settle down and force myself to love you again.
I just like for ice-cream and ice-cream-type beverages to have a uniform texture all the way through, and whipped cream ruins that for me.

On the other hand, whipped cream helps balance out the dryness of cake or the richness of cheesecake quite nicely. And it's a delicious complement to pudding.

I realize I'm totally weird. I was explaining my ketchup rules to Dayna last week, and I'm pretty sure it weirded her out.
I LOVED Twinkies as a kid, but I ate one not too long ago, and it tasted HORRIBLE. I'm not sure if the recipe or my palate changed, but either way, I won't be eating another one.

Snowballs, on the other hand, are a different story.
